VanGogh Impressionist or PostImpressionist

Is VanGogh considered an Impressionist or a PostImpressionist? I've seen it both ways.

I think it should be postimpressionists .

He's not an Impressionist. He's considered a Post-impressionist, but that's really just a catch-all term that also includes artists as diverse as Henri Rousseau and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec.

His work is really the opposite of Impressionism, which is all about capturing one's the light and color which create one's perception (impression) of a scene. In a way the Impressionist painter is trying to disappear.

van Gogh was really more of a pioneer of Expressionism, which is about capturing scenes in ways that express the artist's inner state. Especially turmoil -- turmoil works very well with Expressionism. :-)
