Default Can't read signature, need help please

I love this painting, it is old and abused. I wish I could figure out who painted it and when? I hope my pictures work out ok, I had to make them smaller to upload and I am not computer savy on that part. Hope you can make out something familiar on the signature in the upper left of the painting. I can't see it well. Thank you. I'm glad I found this sight. So much knowledge here!

That is a fantastic picture. So direct, so powerful. Unfortunately I can only make out the faintest trace of the signature.

Julius Garibaldi Melchers -Gari Melchers (11 août 1860 - 30 novembre 1932)
A copy after one of his most beautiful painting, or (I hope so for you) a version by his own hand

Thanks as always, saintmarc. You're a treasure.

Here's a large copy of the painting, for anyone who may be interested...

Wow, you people have knowledge! Now if I can see who painted it. If it is gari melchers does that mean it is worth money? Where is best place to find info on the artist

Are you certain it's a painting and not a printed copy? There were prints made (e.g. see the site I previously linked to), so it may be a print.

If it's a painted copy, then it's extremely accurate and well done. After close comparison, IMO it would have to be a direct copy, rather than a preparatory study or an alternative version. But my gut feeling is that it's a print.
