Default Help to Identify & WHere to go for appraisal

Actually found this piece of art. First glance, thought it was print glued to wood. Microscope and closer inspection..noticed it is a painting..a very good one! VERY OLD ONE! It is small approx 6 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches. will attach pics of back of wood as well. When you look at it in the light and move it around, the robes on the subjects is almost glossy.or a different paint then the background that looks like it is part of the wood already. the wood fibers and paint are so fused due to time, I'm wondering if I actually found something valuable! (seen too many movies..lol) But it is amazing art work and definitelyold. any thoughts? can anyone identify it? look like any particular artists style? I live near Philadelphia..were can I take this to get looked at, identified, and appraised?..somewhere honest that knows their stuff..?? thank you!

You can look under Appraisers in the Yellow Pages. I'm sure they would be honest; they might not be able to authenticate the work, but they should be able to tell you about what you've got and suggest what to do next.

This little painting is a reversed copy (probably made after a print) of a painting by Ludovico Carraci formerly in the collection of Frederick Mont, NY art dealer in the 50's.

The painting is reproduced in the files of the Federico Zeri fundation.

At this point I am beyond admiration for saintmarc, I am beyond awe. I'm a little afraid.
