Hi,
I recently picked up this painting in a junk shop. It looks like watercolour to me, though I could be wrong about that. There's no signature or date, however the name Irvine (D) is written on the back. The painting has been done on a prepared art board from a London supplier. It's reasonably old and most of the lettering on the back of the board is unreadable. The back of the board has a blue-grey, almost metallic look to it. The painting came in this frame and both are in good condition. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kate |

If you plug >Wilson Irvine boats< into Google Images, you'll see a few paintings that are vaguely similar. I wouldn't hold out much hope for it being an original by Wilson Irvine, though.

Many thanks, John. You're right, some of the boat paintings by Wilson Irvine are similar. He also tends to cut the tops off his masts. Obviously he wasn't a sailor. If it isn't an original Irvine it's an original by someone and I wish I could edit the post to put up a better picture, and a better heading. It's a lovely image and quite well painted with a definite impressionist technique used on the reflections and the water. Someone might recognize the painter yet, even if it was only their great-great uncle Old Irvine D.

BTW, I agree, it's a very nice picture. Seems like a real artist and not a knockoff.
