I have no Idea what this is... or who painted this. Any help would be awesome!
It has a very old frame and old nails. the 4 sided nails. the canvas is a brown tan color. Not sure if its because of the old age or the way it was back then. He looks like Jesus Christ... Let me know your thoughts. Thanks. -Sam |

Is there any sign of a signature or, failing that, any other markings?

It is almost impossible to give a serious answer from these dark and blury images. Probably a french (?) painting around 1870 of a saint but..Is he holding an axe? What flower in the other hand? Isn't there something other on the ground?

A lily and an axe? I think this probably makes him St Joseph.

...It might be from the "Spanish Old Master Oil " artist Bartolomé Esteban Murillo...
He does make large paintings and this one in particular has a canny resemblance to the painting- Saint Joseph and the Christ Child: http://www.wikigallery.org/wiki/pain...e-Christ-Child other paintings with similarity of style: St Joseph and the Infant Jesus http://iconsandimagery.blogspot.com/...ant-jesus.html St Joseph with the Infant Christ: http://www.oceansbridge.com/oil-pain...heinfantchrist St. Joseph and the Sleeping Christ Child: http://kemperartmuseum.wustl.edu/col...e/artwork/1038 "St Joseph and the infant Jesus" was recently discovered painting by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo and auctioned in New Orleans on July 23 which carried "a conservative pre-sale estimate of $8,000 to $12,000" http://acn.liveauctioneers.com/index...inting-july-23 ...comparing to the painting "Saint Joseph and the Christ Child" (first link) the facial features are very comparable...? and the artist in his combined works when involving St Joseph has used similar lily's and also an axe. Lastly another painting "Saint Joseph with the Standing Infant Christ" (http://www.catholictradition.org/Jos...ph-gallery.htm) Is held in Ringling Museum of Art, Florida, email them your picture and see what they think? contact info: http://www.ringling.org/ContactUs.aspx?ekfrm=4428 P.s. without Hercules Brabazon contribution I wouldn't have even gotten started.
