This painting is very well done! It is 4" X 6" and painted then fired on a sheet of copper. I aquired it locally a couple years ago. Could this be by Minerva Chapman? http://www.northnet.org/stlawrenceaauw/chapman.htm This site puts her birthplace within 50 miles of my hometown. However I can't find anything of her working on copper.

I'm not an expert, but Minerva Chapman's work is very sophisticated and very "painterly". This painting is quite naive, i.e. crudely done, like folk art. I would be amazed if it was the same artist.

P.S. Possibly Margaret Chapman, although the signature isn't identical.

John I've seen that same painting on a different website, Minus the signature. I also lean towards Margaret Chapman. Thanks

Hi, Cabbie
I have a piece of enamel over copper that's signed M. Chapman. The signature exactly matches your painting's signature. Did you ever determine who M. Chapman is?? Many thanks! |
