The church which I currently serve in Massachusetts has been in possession for over one hundred years of a painting which is identified as being by Giacomo da Ponte (Jacopo Bassano). Could anyone help me identify this painting? I have seen several from that school that are strikingly similar, but nothing that indicates this is a reproduction of an original painting. Thank you very much.

I'm no expert, however, this doesn't look to be of the same quality as Jacopo Bassano's work. I think it may be after his painting 'The Three Magi'
c. 1562. http://www.all-art.org/early_renaissance/bassano1.html Edit: Found it - http://www.wikigallery.org/wiki/pain...on-Of-The-Magi Well Last edited by Eirene : September 4th, 2011 at 03:52 PM. |

Good detective work, Eirene. We're definitely talking about Jacopo Bassano. I agree it's not as good as his best work, but IMO it's as good as something like "The Three Martyr Saints", which is on that page you posted. I think the original poster ought to call an art appraiser and get some professional advice as to how old the painting might be and how to go about getting it properly authenticated.
P.S. rsp3studio: Don't clean it and certainly don't try to mend it until you have gotten some expert advice. Many a painting has survived centuries of benign neglect, only to be destroyed by good intentions. |

Thank you both for your help - I hope to get it appraised within the coming months.
