Help Identify this artist please!

I recently inherited this small NYC painting of a rainy day Washington Square Park.
It is signed and dated 1945. I know the artist is of merit but cannot read the signature. I took pictures of the painting and a close up of the signature but after three tries, I cannot upload it. Any help with that would be appreciated

If the image is too large, any image editor and most image viewers can crop and reduce images down to a reasonable size. I could increase the size limit, but when people post the enormous images that modern cameras generate, it creates side-scrolling problems anyway. Or you can upload the picture to a free image hosting website and post a link.
