Found this in a very old tube in a basement. It measures about 3 ˝ X 4 ˝ feet. The writing on the one barrel I was told read “If you want to achieve something good/worthwhile, you often have to go through a tough time first” I was told it’s a very old German dialect. The cut outs look like it was painted or cut at one time to go around maybe wall sconces or something like that…very weird. The pictures do not do this painting justice. Its detail, shading and colors are amazing! There is no signature anywhere.
Any help would be great. Thank You. |

It appears to be a copy of Eduard von Grützner's The Catastrophe.

John,
Thank you. Weird why someone would go through the trouble of painting a copy...guess they really liked the picture. There are alot of differences also. Scott |

I sent pictures to Laurie Winters who is the Curator of Earlier European Art at the Milwaukee Art Museum. The original is at this museum. I also contacted Gail who is the NYC Curator and she asked me to contact Kathleen Harwood with Harwood Fine Arts in Montrose PA. So I will follow up and see what they have to say.
