For those who haven't stumbled across this yet, Artnet publishes extracts (generally the first couple of paragraphs) from thousands of articles from the definitive Grove Dictionary of Art reference.

I've been of two minds about linking to these excerpts, but recently decided to add links for those artists in the Artcyclopedia database who have such articles available (about 4,000 artists, half of the total we have online). These listings would be grouped on the artist page under "Articles", where available.

As far as I can tell the articles are several years out of date, probably based on the 34-volume(!) 1996 print edition. Nonetheless this is ideal for people seeking an authoritative source for art historical facts.
