Default Smithsonian Art Inventories Online

Just letting people know that Artcyclopedia has recently added links to the Smithsonian Institution's 'Art Inventories' index. Links to the appropriate entry in the database have been added for approximately 1,700 artists, and I expect this to be quite a useful resource for researchers.

The Art Inventories is actually a merger of two separate databases:

The Inventory of American Paintings Executed before 1914. Note that the primary focus is on paintings from pre-1914, but the database is continually being updated and gradually fleshed out with later works.

The Inventory of American Sculpture, which is mainly an index of tens of thousands of outdoor/public sculptures.

The database is primarily a text index of catalogued works (only 3% of entries are illustrated, and many of those photographs are black-and-white), but in the case of well-documented artists the information available can be enormous. For example, the entry for Albert Bierstadt lists over 1,500 works, encompassing dozens of museums and even private collections.
