Hello. Maybe anyone help me with this signature. The picture was in Russia, but Russian art connoisseurs said it was not a Russian artist. They suggest that this is Europe, 19th century. I can not find a similar signature anywhere. What do you think?

Sorry for the delay approving this thread.

I am looking at it now. At first glance maybe "Reneault".

Also "Reneau" seems to be a possible name, more common than "Reneault". Not sure what to do with the last two characters in that case, though.

This page discusses a signature "Rencault" on a Russian painting connected to Aivazovsky. It's not clear if this is a prank by the artist or a hoax or a forgery or a legend. It's in Russian so you may have to use a web page translator.

Thanks. I read this article. The article says that this is a legend, and there is no evidence that the Aivazovsky may be related to this signature.

Interesting that the signature is not quite the same but is similar. In that article and also with this painting, I still think the name looks more like Reneault than Rencault.

Cant find nothing similar in the web. Find only Jean Reneau, but he had different signature.

There is a Reneault painting at this Russian site....not much info. Translation reads Russian landscape, in the old frame. Artel Reneault. Russian until 1917. Couldn't locate any info on an artist by that name. The signature looks right to me...notice the a...an o with the stem attached separately. A Russian trying to write in English? http://antiq74.ru/item/russkiy-peyzazh-v-staroy-rame-artel-reneault-rossiya-do-1917-goda/

Oh, big thanks. I find one more version, http://korners.org.ua/uk/aukcion-28-...doroga-21.html tells that this is Renault Henri, XIX XX., but version with artel more probably, maybe.

If you enlarge it, the signature on that painting looks more like it is spelled Reneault like these others. There is apparently an artist named Henri Renault, but unless he sometimes signed his name Reneault it wouldn't be him.

Interesting, but I can't find any other paintings of Henri Renault and he's sign in the web.
