  • painting by artist Jean Philippe

I have a watercolor of a vase of flowers by Jean Philippe. Stamp on the back is marked Serie 1334. Nr. 3, Stehli Freres, Editeurs, Zurich. I don't know anything about the artist or the painting. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I also have a watercolour of a vase of flowers (anenome) signed by Jean Phillipe. The painting is framed and has a number written on the reverse label. The framer was Arthur Charles Savage of Birmingham and the number is 6835. The painting belonged to an aunt who is now deceased.

I have a print "Poinsettias" by J. Philippe #1363 marked with a stamp from Stehli Freres, Zurich and am curious as well about the artist. I have had no luck in finding information.

        Artist Jean Philippe

I too have the Jean Philippe vase with flowers and Zurich reference. Think we have the same subject matter. Hope that someone knows about this artist as my WEB search does not offer any information.

          Jean Philippe

I also have a watercolour of a vase of flowers with a yellow bowl next to it. It was given to my mother in 1939 by her parents. I'd love to know more about the artist too.

I've red that Jean Phillipe is the same man as A.Marc and that his real name is the well-known painter Nicolas Markovitch. He used the name J. Phillipe only for his litho's (made by Stehli Freres Zurich) with flowers and the name A. Marc for the others litho's (most buildings/mountains etc.). His real name he used for the real aquarels.

              Pieter, Holland

I confirm. Only lithos with flowers were signed J.Philippe, lanscapes were
signed Marc or A.Marc (he works a lot with Stehli), and originals watercolors with his name Nicolas Markovitch.

                  A. Marc

I just removed what I thought was an old watercolor from my late uncle's eclectic Massachusetts collection only to find it was a print. Below the frame it has "A. Marc, pinx." "No. 1266 Harbour at Gloucester, Mass. (Cape Ann)" "Printed in Switzerland - Imprime en Suisse". The picture itself is signed "Marc." The mounting board had faded, but it is so nicely done, and we are nostalgic for this harbor scene of fishing boats--we will restore its framing.

I just purchased a watercolour of houses on Church Street in Wroxton, Oxfordshire. The signature is Marc and it is underlined. My mother also has a watercolour by the same artist and it is a 16th century house in Keddington (Kent). I am wondering if this is the same artist who signs as A. Marc and also signed Nicolas Markovitch.

                      Iceland Poppies

I was given a print of "Pavots de Chine" (Iceland Poppies) by Jean Philippe, and on the back is stamped...Serie 1334 No 5 Stehli Freres, editeurs, Zurich printed in Switzerland. There seems to be quite a few prints about...but I can add no info regarding the artist.

                        Fiber Artist

This is very nice to find others looking for information about J. Phillipe.
I too would like to know more about the person/persons/group of artists that produced the pantings/prints, and Stehli Freres, Editeurs, Zurich.

I grew up with a print of yellow and orange narcissus in a green vase, on our living room wall. The vase is on a low modern table next to a small yellow box with a red top. A large window fills the back of the picture.
With both of my parents gone, I had the faded matt replaced, and I am refurbishing the original wooden frame.
The picture was framed in Grand Rapids Michigan, USA, in ... the early 1950's
My print is marked; Serie 1325 No. 3

I see no unique print number, so I am guessing that these copyrighted prints were mass produced by Stehli Freres. I'm also guessing that these similar paintings of flowers in a vase on a table were Nocholas Markovitch's bread and butter work. This does not, in any way, deminish my affection for this charming picture that holds so many fond memories for me.

                            from Canada

Delighted to find this site as I have enjoyed and wondered about my print. I have considered reframing it as presently it is not shown to its greatest advantage.

I have a print by J Philippe, inherited from my parents. It was a wedding gift to them in 1943.

The print show red flowers in a green glass vase with a blue/green globe-shaped bowl beside the vase. There seems to be a print number but it is obscured by the edge of the matt. On the back on the picture, the label indicates that the print was purchased at the Tresure Shop, 111 King St W, Brockville, ON, Can.
