  • Help with History of a Painting!

I have a painting of slaves picking cotton in a cotton field. There is a large tree on the left and a smaller tree in the distance on the right. There is a black adult male with white hat and shirt, dark capri length pants, barefoot, with a bag slung across his left sholder. He is standing by a wagon with cotton in baskets on the left side of the painting. He is facing away and you can see the profile of his the left side of his face. There is a small town in the distance with white buildings, a couple of churches, a large building on the left and a large house/building on a hill in the very back. There is a boy and girl on the left of the painting. The boy is leaning against the tree dumping a small basket of cotton in to a larger basket overflowing with cotton. He is dress the same as the man I already described and is looking downward so his hat is covering all of his face except his mouth, chin, and jaw. The girl beside him is sitting on a tree stump with her hands in the large basket of cotton. She is wearing a red dress and is barefoot. Directly underneath the boy and girl and the large basket of cotten in the name Roz. That is it. In the center of the painting is a woman with a white cloth wrapped around her head. She is facing away toward the town. You can only see the back of her and she has a basket of cotton on her head. She is holding it up with both arms. There are six other nondescript slaves bending down picking cotton in the painting. On the back of the painting it says Collector Series 79 B 982. It came from a gallery in Kalamazoo, MI that has a non working # and I cannot locate it otherwise. The info. for this gallery is,
Creative Galleries, Inc. 4805 Milham Kalamazoo, MI 49002 616-375-6613

Thank you soooooooo much for Any and All help anyone can provide on this painting. I have looked and looked for anything that might be helpful and come up completely empty handed.

Replying to your Old Post (from 2006)

I have recently moved and decided to look to see if I could locate the artist for a sand painting I have. I too got it from Creative Galleries, Inc. in Kalamazoo, MI back in 1992.

I was wondering if you were able to find anything out about your painting? I see a signature on the painting, but I can't make out what it says at all.

    Thanks...
    Monica

                  Looking for information as well

After my grandfather passed away I kept one of his paintings. Its a fall scene, oil painting in frame.

It came from Creation Galleries in Kalamazoo Mi, Creation Galleries is no longer open.

the Artist name I think is Inidina Its hard for me to tell what the first letter of the name is because of the hand writing. Wondering if anyone may know anything about this artist.

Would love to hear more about the history of the studio as well. I see others have posted about it but i see no reaplies.

I have two nice seascapes from there, can't find either artist in google search, does anyone know how to learn who owned the gallery? Tax records, or city directory maybe?

This is an old thread that still seems to be active every now and again, so I thought I would post what I know about Creative Galleries. I have 2 paintings that I purchased from Creative Galleries, which was not an art gallery, but a direct sales company that operated like Tupperware or Party Lite, etc. with home parties. I bought these in 1990 or 1991. My friend was a sales consultant with the company for a very short period of time and I had a home party for her. She showed a number of the paintings and then took orders. If I remember correctly, the paintings were done by various artists that were hired by the company to paint for them. That's why there are so many painting styles. I also cannot read the signature of the artist. I don't know how valuable they are. For some reason that I cannot remember, I went to their location to pick up my paintings. It was like a small warehouse with paintings in stacks waiting to be framed and shipped out. I am now getting ready to put them in a garage sale.
